Erie Does Not Quote DUI Cases Online
You go to Erie's website, start a quote, and the system asks about violations. You enter the DUI conviction date. The quote tool stops and tells you to contact an agent. No rate appears. No explanation of whether Erie will accept you at all. You are stuck at the first procedural step with no visibility into whether pursuing Erie is worth your time.
Erie writes after-DUI coverage in West Virginia, but the company does not quote alcohol violations through its online system. Every DUI application goes through manual underwriting. An Erie agent submits your application to the underwriting team, who review the conviction date, your current license status, whether you completed the Safety and Treatment Program, and whether you are enrolled in the Motor Vehicle Alcohol and Drug Test and Lock (Interlock) Program. Approval is not automatic. The underwriting decision takes 3-7 business days after the agent submits your full application.

20 days
West Virginia's Motor Vehicle Alcohol and Drug Test and Lock Program processes applications in approximately 20 days after the provider submits required documents. Enrollment before your scheduled revocation date lets you drive in lieu of full revocation.

What Erie Underwrites For
Erie's underwriting team evaluates three factors: how long ago the conviction occurred, whether your license is currently valid or under restriction, and whether you have completed state-mandated programs. Convictions within the past 12 months face the hardest scrutiny. Drivers whose revocation period has ended and who hold a valid unrestricted license have the highest approval rate. Drivers currently enrolled in the Interlock Program can be approved, but Erie prices the policy as high-risk and may require proof of program enrollment and compliance.
West Virginia does not use SR-22 or FR-44 certificates. The old financial-responsibility certificate framework under WV Code 17D-4-15 through 17D-4-20 is fully repealed. West Virginia enforces compulsory insurance through the Online Insurance Verification Program. After a DUI revocation, reinstatement requires only current proof of West Virginia liability insurance — the insurer WV-1B Certificate of Insurance — plus the $50 reinstatement fee. There is no multi-year filing requirement. Erie agents understand this and do not ask for an SR-22 form because none exists in this state.
Erie's manual underwriting means the agent has discretion to advocate for your application. If you completed the Safety and Treatment Program, paid all fines, and enrolled in the Interlock Program on time, the agent includes those facts in the submission. Underwriting sees compliance, not just the conviction. Drivers who provide complete documentation up front get faster decisions than those who submit partial information and wait for the underwriter to request missing items.
Erie will not approve your application if your license is currently revoked and you are not enrolled in the Interlock Program. Valid restricted or unrestricted status is required.
How the Agent Submission Works

The agent asks for your driver's license number, conviction date, completion certificate from the Safety and Treatment Program, proof of Interlock Program enrollment if applicable, and current vehicle information. The agent enters this into Erie's underwriting portal and uploads scanned copies of your documents. The underwriting team reviews the file within 3-7 business days. If approved, the agent calls you with the premium quote. If declined, the agent explains the reason and whether reapplying after a waiting period is an option.
Premium amounts are set by underwriting based on the conviction recency, your age, vehicle type, and coverage selections. Erie does not publish DUI rate tables. The agent cannot estimate your premium before underwriting completes the review. Drivers approved within 12 months of conviction typically see premiums in the high-risk range. Drivers approved 24 months or more after conviction see lower premiums, though still higher than clean-record rates. The agent can quote liability-only or full coverage depending on your vehicle's lien status and value.
What Happens If Erie Declines
Erie declines applications when the conviction is too recent, when the driver's license is fully revoked with no Interlock enrollment, or when the driver has multiple alcohol violations within a short period. The agent receives a declination letter from underwriting stating the reason. You can ask the agent whether waiting 6 or 12 months and reapplying would change the outcome. Some drivers are told to reapply after the revocation period ends and the license is fully reinstated.
If Erie declines, you need a carrier that writes high-risk policies without manual underwriting delays. Dairyland, The General, National General, and Progressive all write after-DUI coverage in West Virginia and quote online or through agents with faster turnaround. These carriers price DUI cases higher than Erie would, but approval is more predictable. Geico writes DUI cases in West Virginia but also uses manual underwriting for recent convictions, so approval timelines are similar to Erie. State Farm writes DUI cases selectively and requires agent submission, with underwriting discretion comparable to Erie.

Interlock Enrollment and Insurance Timing
West Virginia's Motor Vehicle Alcohol and Drug Test and Lock Program is the only interim-driving mechanism available during a DUI revocation. You apply to the WV DMV Interlock Section before your scheduled revocation date to drive in lieu of revocation, or after the revocation begins. The program provider submits required documents to the DMV. Processing takes approximately 20 days. You must own the vehicle or have written approval from the owner to install the interlock device. You must enroll in or complete the Safety and Treatment Program within 60 days of beginning the Interlock Program. You cannot be appealing the revocation at the time of application.
Insurance must be in place before the interlock device is installed. The Interlock Program requires proof of West Virginia liability insurance meeting the state minimum of 25/50/25. Erie and other carriers will insure a vehicle with an interlock device, but you must disclose the device during the application. Some carriers charge an additional premium for interlock-equipped vehicles. The insurer issues the WV-1B Certificate of Insurance, which you provide to the interlock installation vendor and to the DMV as part of your Interlock Program enrollment.
Compare Carriers That Write Your Situation
Erie's manual underwriting process means you wait 3-7 business days for an answer, and approval is not guaranteed. If you need coverage faster or want to compare multiple options before committing to one carrier's underwriting review, start with carriers that quote DUI cases online. Dairyland, The General, National General, and Progressive all provide online quotes for West Virginia drivers with DUI convictions. You enter your conviction date, license status, and vehicle information, and the system returns a bindable quote immediately. No agent submission, no underwriting delay, no uncertainty about whether you will be approved.
Use the comparison tool to see rates from multiple carriers at once. Enter your zip code, conviction date, and current license status. The tool shows which carriers will accept your application and what premium each charges. Bind coverage online the same day if you need proof of insurance for Interlock Program enrollment or reinstatement. Erie remains an option if you prefer their brand and are willing to wait for manual underwriting, but comparing carriers first tells you whether Erie's eventual quote is competitive or whether another carrier offers better value for your specific situation.
